Your late-night commute along State Route 91 just got a bit more complicated. From Cerritos to Gardena, Caltrans is scheduling multiple overnight lane reductions, connector closures, and ramp shutdowns this week as part of a major sign rehabilitation project.
Caltrans is conducting K-rail installation along SR-91 from Monday, March 23 through Saturday, March 28, 2026, as part of a $34 million project to upgrade signs, lighting, guardrails, and highway landscaping along a 14.7-mile stretch of the freeway in Los Angeles County.
π Where & When to Expect Lane Reductions
Overnight lane closures will reduce SR-91 to two lanes in both directions between:
- Vermont Avenue in Gardena
- Orange County line at PM 20.7 in Cerritos
Rolling full closures of connectors and ramps will also occur as crews move between locations. Detour routes will be clearly marked.

Nearby residents and businesses should also anticipate temporary noise, dust, and vibrations during overnight construction.
π Why Itβs Happening: $34 Million Upgrade

- Rehabilitate and upgrade roadside and overhead signs
- Improve lighting
- Restore highway landscaping
- Replace guardrails
- Enhance worker safety
The contractor, Security Paving Company, Inc., is leading the work. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2029.
π¦ Plan Ahead
Plan ahead if you travel SR-91 between Gardena and Cerritos this week. Overnight slowdowns, detours, and ramp closures may impact your commute. Consider leaving earlier, rerouting, or adjusting your travel times. Caltrans reminds drivers to βBe Work Zone Alertβ and βSlow for the Cone Zone.β
