Calling all Studio Ghibli fans! The Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo neighborhood is hosting a listening party celebrating the iconic soundtracks for Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved films.
The center hosts a regular listening party for their Japanese Film & Animation Soundtracks, and next up in the queue is Studio Ghibli. On Friday, June 6, you can step into the center’s private Japanese garden and flood your ears with sounds of Studio Ghibli and master composer Joe Hisaishi – and even sip on some Japanese whiskey.
The soundtracks include Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and more.
The listening sessions and DJ sets are hosted by We Share Records’ Tsugu Itagaki in collaboration with In Sheep’s Clothing and are supported by Orion Beer. Whiskey, beer, and wine are available for purchase.
The event announcement on social media also includes some fun Studio Ghibli history.
“The decades-long partnership between Joe Hisaishi and the Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki began in 1984 with Nausicaä Valley of the Wind. It is one of the great director composer collaborations (like Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone or Steven Spielberg and John Williams.) Hisaishi’s minimalist yet heartfelt compositions perfectly complement Ghibli’s tender, universally appealing films.”
