Southern California is facing an intense heatwave this week. Los Angeles will see a steady rise from the low 80s on Monday to the low 90s by Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to hit their highest levels on Wednesday and Thursday, but the heat will still remain on Friday as we go into Memorial Day weekend.
Additionally, in the San Fernando Valley, forecasts show highs reaching 103°F on Wednesday and 101°F on Thursday. Inland regions like the Inland Empire are also predicted to experience temperatures ranging from the mid- to upper 90s.
In addition to the intense heat, there is also heightened concern for grass fire danger which increases the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires. You can find ways to stay safe during wildfires here.
Health and Safety Risks
The National Weather Service cautions that these unusually high May temperatures in Southern California could pose significant health risks, especially for the elderly and young children. Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and watch for possible heat advisories.
How To Stay Safe During A Heat Wave
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Stay Indoors: If possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day when the sun is at its highest point.
- Use Air Conditioning or Fans: Keep your home cool with air conditioning or fans. If this is not a possibility, consider visiting a cooling center or public places like malls or libraries.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: Postpone outdoor activities or exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on pets, elderly family members, neighbors, and those with chronic medical conditions who may be more susceptible to heat-related illness.
