Their tiny paws, the way they hold on to rocks, those little eyes… Everything about otters is pure cuteness. And what could be better for animal lovers (or otter fans in particular) than the chance to swim with them while supporting their conservation? Well, that’s exactly what you can do just two hours from L.A.
In 2003, Kevin and Wendy Yates lost their home in the wildfires that hit Southern California. The outpouring of support they received inspired them to give back. So, in 2008, they founded Nurtured By Nature, an animal sanctuary in Valley Center (San Diego County).
The sanctuary it’s a place where people can connect with nature, by having the opportunity to interact with animals like fennec foxes, capybaras, sloths, lemurs, armadillos, kangaroos, and of course, swim with otters. While the experience is designed for everyone, Nurture By Nature places special emphasis on providing these experiences to children in need, even partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Each otter swim encounter offers 8 spots per person, including a 3-4 hour guided group tour with 35 minutes to an hour in the pool with otters. Participants will also interact with at least 6 different species. The encounters last three hours and are for individuals over 16 years old, while those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
