If you’ve been craving a dose of “Old Hollywood”, the secret’s in Newport Beach, Orange County. After four years of meticulous restoration, the Lido Theater has officially reopened its doors, and it’s more than just a place to catch a flick. It’s a veritable time machine.
The 45-foot tower and glowing circular copper marquee is the first indication of its grandeur. Built in 1939 (opening with Bette Davis, no less!), this Art Deco masterpiece has been polished to a mirror shine. The auditorium bears hidden treasures: hand-painted ocean murals that actually glow, all tucked under a stunning celestial ceiling. It’s dreamy, it’s moody, and it gives Golden Age vibes.

Things to Look Forward to
This spring, the venue hosts nostalgic screenings of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on April 17 and a legendary Star Wars marathon starting May 1, alongside soulful live performances like Which One’s Pink? on May 16 and the sharp wit of David Spade on June 28. Guests can maximize the experience by concluding the evening with craft brews at the nearby Lido Bottle Works for the ultimate California night out.

Candlelight concerts at Lido Theater
What’s more, Candlelight concerts are coming to make this spectacular theater even more breathtaking as thousands of candles illuminate its unique architecture and decor. There, you can hear tributes to everything from classical musicians to pop and rock performed by string quartets and pianists.

The Magic is in the Details
Whether you’re a cinema buff or just a fan of beautiful spaces, the Lido can win you over with the little things. We’re talking about original 1939 restroom tiles and a massive red velvet waterfall curtain that still sweep open before every screening. But they’ve upgraded to a state-of-the-art digital projection and 7.1 surround sound that makes every note of their Candlelight concerts or “Decade Week” classics feel brand new.

The renovation cleverly expanded the lobby to bring a 1939 time capsule, originally buried outside, directly into the main hall, marked by decorative brass anchors embedded in the terrazzo floor. Surrounded by restored hand-painted marine murals and “goddess” aisle panels, visitors can stand atop this hidden vault of 1930s. Swing by their pop-up café starting at 7 am for a Mortadella breakfast sandwich, or grab your tickets for a classic screening at thelidotheater.com. Don’t forget that parking in the back lot is free.
