Warm weather ahead! Southern California is in for a stretch of classic summer heat as high temperatures return this week. Residents in both coastal and inland areas can expect temperatures to climb as the week goes on.
Los Angeles and Orange counties will enjoy sunny, warm conditions on Monday, with temperatures reaching a high of 84°F and dipping to a low of 64°F overnight. However, by Wednesday, highs are expected to climb to around 90°F in those counties.
In the valleys and Inland Empire, Monday’s temperatures will be hotter, with highs near 95°F and lows around 66°F. By Thursday, the heat will intensify, with temperatures potentially hitting 101°F. The hot temperatures are due to a high-pressure system expanding over Southern California.
More worrisome is the fact that this weather brings elevated fire hazard conditions. The latest wildfire outbreak in SoCal, named the Gifford Fire, is currently only blazing in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. However, the NWS states that the fire “continues to generate considerable smoke which will impact portions of Southwest California.”
☀️How To Stay Safe During A Heat Wave
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Stay Indoors: If possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day when the sun is at its highest point.
- Seek Shade: If you must be outside, seek refuge from the sun. Limit your exposure to direct sunlight between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when the sun’s rays are strongest.
- Use Air Conditioning or Fans: Keep your home cool with air conditioning or fans. If this is not a possibility, consider visiting a cooling center or public places like malls or libraries.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: Postpone outdoor activities or exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on pets, elderly family members, neighbors, and those with chronic medical conditions who may be more susceptible to heat-related illness.
