The University of Southern California has an excellent reputation for athletics. And they fully expect to continue upholding their good standing in the global sports community. The university has produced more than 500 Olympians and Paralympians with more overall medalists and gold medalists than any other university in the United States.
Impressive numbers for USC
In total, the famous university has sent over 500 athletes to Summer Olympic games over the years. Even better, those athletes won over 300 Summer Olympic medals. The USC athletes who are included among this group are “all Olympic non-coaching and non-alternate competitors who attended at least one class at USC before, during or after their Olympic appearance.”
And this year’s Olympics are no exception with USC sending 66 Trojans to Paris to compete among the best athletes in the world. USC predicts that at least one of those incredible athletes will bring home a gold medal and continue their monumental winning streak stretching back over 112 years. This year will mark it as 116 years of winning if at least one athlete makes it atop the gold medal podium. USC Olympians have earned at least one gold medal in every single summer Olympics since 1912.
The USC total Olympic medal count is 326 which includes:
- 77 Bronze Medals
- 96 Silver Medals
- 153 Gold Medals
Making Olympic history
The University of Southern California first began this epic Olympic journey way back in 1904 when Emil Breitkreutz competed in St. Louis. The Olympic tradition was continued in 1912 by Fred Kelly in Stockholm. And it’s an incredible legacy that’s continued on until today.
As of 2020, there are 7 USC athletes that have earned a spot in the United States Olympic Hall of Fame for swimming, diving, basketball, and track. These are all modern athletes competing from 1984 to 2004. And there’s plenty room for even more athletic excellence this year. Keep watching to see these young athletes achieve impressive feats during these Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
