Looking for a unique, mindful experience in Los Angeles this weekend? A beautifully crafted workshop is inviting Angelenos to slow down, work with their hands, and explore culture through an everyday object: chopsticks.
Hosted at The People Place and led by designer, woodworker, teaching artist, Ali Chen, this immersive session goes far beyond a typical DIY class. It’s equal parts craft, storytelling, and self-reflection.
When Is It Happening?
There are two sessions available this Sunday, April 19th:
- 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Each workshop offers an intimate, guided experience with plenty of time to learn and create.
What Will You Learn?
This hands-on experience teaches participants how to craft their own personalized pair of chopsticks from scratch using traditional and modern techniques.
You’ll learn:
- The basics of woodworking in a beginner-friendly environment
- How to safely use a Japanese hand plane for precise shaping
- How to work with custom-designed wooden jigs and fixtures
- Techniques for refining and finishing your chopsticks
- How to personalize your pair with laser engraving
By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a bespoke set of chopsticks that’s entirely your own.

How To Get Tickets
Tickets are priced at $160 per person, which includes all materials, tools, and instruction.
To help keep the experience accessible, two no-cost tickets are available per workshop for those who may need financial support.
Spots are limited, so early booking is highly recommended. Purchase your tickets here!
More Than Just a Craft Workshop
What makes this experience truly special is its cultural depth. Through storytelling and discussion, the workshop explores how chopsticks vary across different countries and dining traditions.
Participants gain insight into how design reflects cultural values and how something as simple as a utensil can foster connection, ritual, and community.
There’s also a reflective element woven throughout the process. As you shape your chopsticks, you’re encouraged to think about intention, lifestyle, and the kind of daily rituals you want to cultivate.
If you’re craving something creative, meaningful, and a little out of the ordinary, this workshop is a rare chance to connect craft, culture, and community all in one afternoon.
