Almost as big as 45 football fields, or half the size of a standard golf course. That’s how huge this California corn maze is, which at one point was officially the largest in the world, certified by the Guinness World Records.
About six hours from Los Angeles, in the state’s central region and just minutes from Sacramento, a massive 63-acre corn maze rises up at Cool Patch Pumpkins, definitely not for the faint of heart. The maze is size is so massive, that it got nationwide notoriety a while ago, several people would get stuck unable to find the edges of the vegetable labyrinth and would call 911 to ask for help, as ABC reported.
In one of the calls, a mother of two told the local sheriff, “I don’t know what to do anymore. We’ve been wandering for hours, and I think we’re living in corn now!” It turns out these kinds of emergencies aren’t all that unusual during the fall, when visitors flock to this massive, adrenaline-packed agricultural attraction.
Authorities, however, assure everyone there’s nothing to fear, as 100% of “lost families” are found within minutes (though you might start naming the cornstalks while you wait). Plus, there are plenty of maps to carry while exploring, so you won’t get stuck anywhere.
But beyond the quirky side of those calling in emergency services, this corn maze is truly wild, whether you’re exploring it up close or admiring it from afar. That’s because its layout changes every year. Back in 2015, the maze was decorated with a huge Sacramento Kings logo!
Matt Cooley founded Cool Patch Pumpkins in 2001, starting by selling pumpkins with his kids on the edge of their field. What began as a family passion grew into a world-renowned pumpkin patch and corn maze, featured across news outlets, websites, and even the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Cool Patch corn maze first caught Guinness’ attention in 2007, when it was certified as the world’s largest at 43.5 acres. The Cooleys kept expanding it over the years, officially earning “record breaker” status until 2022, when a 65.8-acre maze in Canada took the crown.
This year, Cool Patch Pumpkins opens its gates on September 20, 2025, ready to welcome brave adventurers eager to explore the world-renowned corn maze. Though it’s a bit of a long drive from SoCal, the journey is well worth it as this isn’t just a maze, it’s an immersive experience filled with fun, challenges, and seasonal charm!
