Waves begin to form on the horizon, their white crests rising above the blue sea, and at just the right moment, a surfboard slices through them with skill and precision… Carrying top-tier athletes with nerves of steel and a drive to reach the podium: dogs!
This paw-some display of athleticism took place at the 2025 World Dog Surfing Championships, held on Saturday, August 2nd, in Pacifica. Just like every year, this tail-wagging event brings together fearless four-legged surfers and their humans to ride the waves, show off their skills, and compete for the coveted title of top dog.
After being judged on confidence, technique, size of the wave ridden, and overall style, this year’s top winners in the main category are Cacau (1st), Koa (2nd), and Faith (3rd).
Cacau is a chocolate Labrador from Brazil who once again took home the overall Top Dog title. Trained from puppyhood by former pro surfer Ivan Moreira, she’s a back‑to‑back champion thanks to her fearless confidence, sharp technique, and mastery over 4–5 foot waves!
Koa, who took second place overall, wowed the judges with her consistent style and skill throughout the competition, likely thanks to her extensive sports experience, including two first-place wins at the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge.
Faith, a 14-year-old Pit Bull and senior rescue, finished third overall and topped the large-dog category. Known as the “Coolest doggo of all time” by Sports Illustrated back in 2021, Faith is considered a pioneer in the world of dog surfing. Her inspiring story and remarkable performance at this likely final competition have made her a beloved figure in the dog surfing community.
If you’re a fan of dog surfing competitions, stay tuned… Pacifica’s event isn’t the only one! This September, more exciting dog surf contests are hitting the waves closer to L.A., so get ready for more tail-wagging action near you.
