If you are a frequent flier out of L.A., you might have heard the recent buzz about American Airlines adjusting its late-summer schedule. The airline is temporarily dropping six North American routes — four of them flying straight out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) — adjusting its schedule to cope with high jet fuel prices.

While losing a nonstop option is always an inconvenience, these are temporary suspensions rather than permanent cancellations. Here is exactly what is happening and what you need to do if your flight is affected.

The affected routes

The route suspensions are scheduled to run from August 5 through October 5.

Four of the affected routes target LAX directly, while the remaining two cut direct access between the Charlotte (CLT) hub and other California airports.

• LAX → Cleveland (CLE)
• LAX → Columbus (CMH)
• LAX → Pittsburgh (PIT)
• LAX → Washington Dulles (IAD)
• Charlotte (CLT) → Ontario (ONT)
• Charlotte (CLT) → Sacramento (SMF)

What Happens to your booking?

In a statement regarding the adjustments to KTLA, American Airlines stated:

“American has seasonally adjusted service on select routes in August and September as the airline refines its capacity growth for 2026. […] Travelers on impacted routes will be offered alternate travel arrangements or a refund in line with American’s customer-friendly schedule change policy.”

This means that you aren’t stranded, but your travel day just got a bit longer. If you are already holding a ticket for one of these flights during the two-month blackout window, American Airlines will handle your ticket. You have two primary options:

• Rebooking via connecting flights: Travelers can still reach all six destinations on American Airlines. However, you will be rerouted on a connecting flight.
• Refunds: If a connecting flight does not suit your travel schedule, American’s policy allows affected passengers to cancel the itinerary for a full refund back to the original form of payment.
