This small and charming town is a local gem, known for its delicious sweets and its ever-present Viking legacy – and its cultural and architectural heritage is a true national treasure. With its giant windmill and steeply pitched rooftops, it feels like you’ve stepped out of the Golden State and straight into Denmark.
The Danish Capital of America is just a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, and it was recently named the best small town in the West by USA Today 10Best. Yes, we’re talking about the one and only, Solvang.
Solvang was founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants who wanted to keep their traditions and way of life alive. They chose this peaceful corner of the Santa Ynez Valley for its sunny weather and gentle landscapes, which reminded them of their home. Over time, the town grew while keeping its European charm, and that’s exactly what makes it so special today.
In the summer, Solvang offers plenty of charming experiences. You can stroll through its flower-lined streets, rent a surrey bike, and visit the outdoor Festival Theater for plays and concerts under the stars.

If you’re more of an outdoorsy person, spend the day at Lake Cachuma Recreation Area or the nearby Santa Ynez River, where you can swim, boat, and fish. A must-visit for animal lovers is the very quirky and unique Ostrichland just outside town, where you can feed ostriches and emus! For wine lovers, local vineyards offer outdoor tastings paired with cheese or cupcakes, perfect for sunny afternoons in one of the best wine regions in the country.
If you’re craving a fully immersive experience into Danish culture, you’d better mark your calendar for the upcoming Danish Days Festival. From Friday, September 19 to Sunday, September 21, 2025, the biggest celebration of Danish heritage takes place, with the theme Be Happy – Vær Glæde! Highlights include an axe-throwing arena to test your Viking skills, craft markets, free concerts, and a beer and wine garden.
From late November through early January, Julefest transforms the town into a Danish holiday wonderland, where (among other activities) families can join the fun searching for hidden Danish gnomes called Nisser! Other highlights include the beloved December Christmas parade, a European-style outdoor artisan market, and the traditional Christmas tree burning in January.
