One of Southern California’s most useful coastal train services will be temporarily taken out of service across a huge stretch of its route this month. The Pacific Surfliner will completely shut down for an entire weekend as crews carry out several major track and infrastructure projects along the rail corridor.
For anyone planning a weekend trip from L.A., especially toward Orange County or San Diego, the timing is worth noting now rather than at the station. There will be no Pacific Surfliner trains between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on September 12 and 13, and no replacement bus bridge will be provided for the full closure.
When will the Pacific Surfliner shut down?
The full-corridor closure is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, through Sunday, September 13. During those two days, Pacific Surfliner trains will not operate anywhere between San Diego and San Luis Obispo.
That means major stations along the route will be affected, including Los Angeles, Anaheim, Irvine, San Juan Capistrano, Oceanside, Santa Barbara and Ventura. The Surfliner normally serves 29 stations across a 351-mile coastal rail corridor, making this a significant disruption for weekend travelers.
Unlike some previous service interruptions, there will be no bus bridge replacing the trains during this corridor-wide shutdown. Amtrak Connection buses will continue running on their usual routes, but passengers should not expect a train connection to those buses during the closure.
Why is the line shutting down?
The weekend shutdown is being coordinated across several rail operators so crews can carry out multiple projects at once and avoid repeated disruptions in the future. Work includes a project just south of Irvine Station involving the rerouting of Borrego Creek and installation of a new channel box under the railroad. The work will eventually help extend Marine Way beneath the tracks and improve access to the Orange County Great Park.
Crews will also continue work around San Clemente, where ongoing projects involve slope stabilization and trail reconstruction. Farther north, maintenance is planned in Tunnel 26 near Chatsworth, including ballast cleaning and water-pump work designed to help protect the tracks from deterioration. Additional track rehabilitation will take place at various points along the Ventura Subdivision.
The idea is to bundle the work into one concentrated weekend rather than create a series of separate shutdowns along the LOSSAN Corridor, which also carries Metrolink and COASTER trains.
Metrolink is also affected
The weekend won’t only affect Amtrak passengers. Metrolink’s Ventura County, Orange County and Inland Empire-Orange County lines will also be completely suspended September 12–13, with no alternate transportation provided.
The good news is that the closure is temporary. Regular Pacific Surfliner service is expected to resume after the scheduled work weekend, while crews use the downtime to tackle several projects at once and improve the long-term reliability of one of Southern California’s busiest rail corridors.
So, consider this your friendly reminder to check the train schedule before you make those September weekend plans. The Pacific views will still be there — you’ll just need another way to get to them on September 12 and 13.
