A unique way to get your art fix in the city—and it comes with a thigh workout.
There’s art all around us! You just have to look for it. If you’re looking to switch up your scenery during your daily power walk, why not try one of these beautifully painted staircases? You’ll be getting a good workout and you’ll get to enjoy some unique art along the way. Here are 5 amazing painted staircases to climb around LA.
1.) Swan Stairway
The bold colors and geometric shapes were painted by Long Island native and artist Evelyn Leigh (@thepaintedline), who has been creating art all over New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco. One of the stairways painted here is part of the Swan Staircase for the Adopt-a-Stair program. The stairways provided domestic workers with a direct path to wealthier homes in the area. This work spans three parts and 117 steps. As one of the more popular workout spots amongst Silver Lake residents, the blue-ombre and geometric patterned steps will always have bodies racing up and down them. Tag your pictures with the hashtag #SwanSteps to show the artist some love.
Location: 2958 Swan Pl, Silver Lake
2.) Micheltorena Stairs
Often noted as one of the most viewed steps on Instagram, the rainbow colors and huge heart painted at the bottom of the 177 steps are unmissable from Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake. As you reach the top of each set of steps, you’ll soon realize there are two more sets to go—but it’s well worth the hike. The Micheltorena Stairs were painted and signed by artist Corrine Carrey with the hashtag #StairCandy.
Location: 3400 Sunset Blvd
3.) Murray Stairway (Piano Stairs)
You won’t have to go too far for this next set of beautified staircases as it’s located directly across from the Micheltorena stairs. The Murray Stairs or better known as the Piano stairs get their name from their resemblance to the piano keys painted among them. But you won’t hear any music as you jog or walk up the 90 steps.
Location: 3229 Sunset Blvd
4.) Hoover Walk Stairs
The Historic Hoover steps are located in the Los Feliz area in Los Angeles. The “Fluid City Rising” mural painted by rising L.A. artist Ricardo Mendoza, features a pair of Phoenix wings that deliver a flowing blue stream of water cascading down the steps with harvesting figures, framing the steps. It’s an amazing sight that shouldn’t be missed.
5.) The Manzanita Steps
The 40-steps of the Manzanita staircase painted in red and yellow will lead you straight to Sunset Blvd. They were once colored green but they have since faded and the person behind the fresh(ish) coat of paint remains a mystery.
Location: 1112 Manzanita Street
