The breathtaking natural phenomenon of bioluminescence just might be the California equivalent to the northern lights. Bioluminescent waves appear along the coast each year thanks to an algae bloom, usually peaking between mid-spring and early fall.
While many flock to the shore to snap photos, camp out, or even surf these Disney-like glowing waves, there’s now an even more unique and immersive way to experience the magic which, thanks to the algae bloom earlier in the year, might shine brighter than ever before.

This summer through October, the Ocean Institute (a nonprofit based in Dana Point) is hosting its popular Bioluminescence Night Cruises along the Orange County coastline. The sailings are offered on select dates only, with limited spots available. On board, you’ll get to witness the ocean glow with drifting bioluminescent organisms and observe the nighttime marine food chain in action, featuring squid, fish, and more.
Keep in mind that bioluminescence levels can vary, but the experience is always magical. Tickets tend to sell out fast, so be sure to grab yours early.
