Southern California is right in the middle of a transportation makeover. From Metro rail expansions to rapid bus lanes, billions of dollars are being invested to improve how we move around the region. The long-term payoff should mean safer, smoother commutes, but in the meantime, drivers can expect a fair share of headaches.
This weekend is shaping up to be one of those moments, with significant lane reductions and ramp closures planned along one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways. Beginning at 10 PM on Friday, July 17, Caltrans will scale back traffic on the I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass, leaving only two southbound lanes open for most of the weekend as crews continue work on the agency’s $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project.
The project stretches between Van Nuys and Westwood and is designed to improve safety, extend the lifespan of the freeway, and create a smoother ride for the hundreds of thousands of drivers who use the corridor every day.
405 Freeway closures in detail
The traffic restrictions will last until 5 AM on Monday, July 20, and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible, more specifically, these sections in particular:
Southbound I-405
- Reduced to two lanes between the US-101 interchange in Sherman Oaks and the southbound US-101 connector.
- Burbank Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-405 will be closed.
Northbound I-405
- Getty Center Drive off-ramp will be closed.
US-101
- Northbound US-101 connector to southbound I-405 will be fully closed.
- Southbound US-101 connector to southbound I-405 will be reduced to one lane.
If you’re traveling from northbound US-101 to southbound I-405, Caltrans recommends exiting at Sepulveda Boulevard, continuing south on Sepulveda Boulevard, and rejoining the freeway via the Sepulveda Boulevard southbound I-405 on-ramp.
