Los Angeles drivers have another weekend of freeway construction to contend with, with Caltrans preparing for a series of closures along one of the region’s busiest stretches. The work is part of an ongoing effort to improve pavement conditions and safety along the 405.
Drivers heading south through the Sepulveda Pass should plan for significant disruptions from Friday night through early Monday morning. Southbound I-405 will be reduced to three lanes between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, while nearby ramps will also be restricted.
The closures will affect the stretch between Van Nuys and Westwood, where traffic can already move at a crawl on a typical weekend. Northbound lanes will remain open, but anyone traveling south should allow extra time and consider an alternate route if possible.
What to know about the upcoming 405 closures
The closures will be in place from Friday, August 21 at 10 PM to Monday, August 24 at 5 AM. During the closure period, drivers should expect the following impacts:
🚧 Southbound I-405 will be reduced to three lanes between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive.
🚫 The Ventura Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-405 will be closed.
🚫 The northbound I-405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive will be closed.
Note: Unlike earlier construction weekends, the U.S. 101 connectors to southbound I-405 will remain open during this period.
Drivers traveling through the area are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours for ramp closures, and use alternate routes such as Interstate 5, Interstate 110, or State Route 170.
The work is part of Caltrans’ $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which is focused on improving pavement conditions, safety, and mobility through the Sepulveda Pass.
