Tucked deep in the Sierra Nevada, there’s a small mountain village that most travelers drive right past on their way to bigger destinations. Halfway between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, this tiny community turns into a full-blown concert hall every summer, drawing music lovers to a stage most wouldn’t expect to find at 7,000 feet.
🏔️ A village built for skiing
Bear Valley was first named Grizzly Bear Valley for the abundance of grizzlies in the vicinity. In 1952, the Orvis family purchased the land and developed it into a full ski resort. Bear Valley Mountain Resort officially opened for the 1967-68 winter season, quickly becoming a go-to escape for skiers throughout Northern and Central California.
🎻 A symphony orchestra in the middle of the mountains
Just one year after the resort opened, Bear Valley added something unexpected: a full symphony orchestra. The Bear Valley Music Festival launched in 1968 and has run every summer since, making 2026 its 58th year.
The festival takes place inside a large white performance tent, built to hold a full orchestra on stage. It draws around 4,000 attendees annually, with a lineup that spans classical, opera, Broadway, jazz, blues, and rock. Past performers have included The Mamas and the Papas and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
🎶 What to expect in 2026
This year’s festival runs from July 17 through August 2, spanning 17 days of music. The 2026 lineup includes a David Bowie tribute with Space Oddity, a yacht rock dance party with Mustache Harbor, a Tom Petty tribute act, and orchestral performances featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Paganini, and Respighi. The festival also hosts intimate “Sip & Sonatas” evenings, pairing local wine tastings with chamber music performances.
🚗 How to get there
From Los Angeles, Bear Valley is roughly a 7-hour drive, making it more of a weekend or multi-day trip than a quick escape. The most direct route runs north on the 5 Freeway, then east on Highway 4 through the Stanislaus National Forest. Interestingly, the halfway point between L.A. and Bear Valley lands almost exactly in Kingsburg, California’s “Little Sweden,” making it a fitting stop to break up the drive.
