Less than a year after construction kicked off, California’s long-awaited high-speed rail project has just hit a major milestone: crews have officially completed installation at a massive railhead facility in Kern County, setting the stage for track-laying to finally begin.
Located just south of Wasco, this sprawling 150-acre site is essentially the nerve center of the entire operation right now, a logistics hub where everything (from raw materials to heavy machinery) gets organized before moving out to active construction zones.
The site is already fully operational, with six rail connections feeding into the yard, enabling a constant flow of materials and equipment. A control office orchestrates the movement of trains, workers, and machinery with precision, alongside a maintenance yard, workshop, and a massive warehouse stocked with essentials like crushed rock, fiber optics, and electrical wiring.
Track-laying is set to begin this year

Now that the railhead is up and running, crews can start delivering the materials needed to lay the tracks, something that until now has been largely theoretical.
This means laying huge steel bars, concrete ties, and support poles for the overhead catenary system, the electric wires that will eventually power trains traveling up to 220 mph. These materials are being carefully stored on raised platforms to prevent damage, since at this scale, even a little rust can cause major problems.
The facility also includes 10 miles of temporary rail lines connected to the national freight network, making it much easier to bring in supplies nationwide without relying solely on trucks.
Another similar railhead is already planned further north near Fresno, but for now, this Kern County hub will handle the heavy lifting as the project moves into its next phase.
The California High-Speed Rail project is planned to connect San Francisco to Los Angeles in under three hours, covering more than 500 miles through the Central Valley. Once completed, it will be the first high-speed rail network in the United States.
