Los Angeles is known for its soccer culture, but a new report suggests California’s impact on the beautiful game runs far deeper than local fandom.
According to a new study commissioned by BetMGM, California ranks as the single most influential state in United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) World Cup history after analyzing every American World Cup squad from 1930 through 2022.
⚽ California has produced more World Cup talent than any other state
The research found California-born players have made more appearances, scored more goals, and contributed more overall to the USMNT at the World Cup than players from anywhere else in the country.
Researchers found California has produced:
- 23 USMNT World Cup players
- 72 World Cup match appearances
- 9 World Cup goals
- 14 World Cup wins contributed to
- 118 total World Cup contribution points
The report also found California-born players have recorded nearly 10 times more World Cup appearances than the average U.S. state.
📊 The top states producing USMNT World Cup talent
While California topped the rankings comfortably, several other states also emerged as historic soccer pipelines for the national team.
🥇 Top 10 states for USMNT World Cup contributions:
- California
- New Jersey
- Missouri
- Illinois
- Pennsylvania
- Massachusetts
- Texas
- New York
- Michigan
- Georgia

🏟️ Over half of U.S. states have never produced a World Cup player
The report also highlighted how concentrated elite soccer development has historically been in just a handful of states.
Researchers found:
- 27 U.S. states have never recorded a single USMNT World Cup appearance
- 40 states have never produced a USMNT World Cup goalscorer
- California alone accounts for roughly 30% of all USMNT World Cup goal-scorers
🌎 California continues shaping the USMNT on soccer’s biggest stage
The findings arrive just as the latest USMNT roster includes three California-born players: Haji Wright, Cristian Roldan, and Max Arfsten.
Of those players, Wright is the only Californian on the current roster to have previously appeared in a World Cup match. And one of only three players in the squad to have scored a World Cup goal.
The study also identified California soccer legend Landon Donovan as the nation’s top World Cup contributor, recording five World Cup goals and 12 tournament appearances across his career.
It’s exciting to see what California players are bringing to the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer!
