U.S. News & World Report has unveiled its newest list of the best global universities for 2026–2027, with California institutions leading the way.
Although Harvard University claimed the #1 position, Stanford University in Palo Alto followed closely behind at #3.
UC Berkeley landed at #7, slipping one spot from last year but still ranking ahead of UCLA, which placed #13.
Three additional California schools made it into the world’s top 25: UCSF at #22, with CalTech and UC San Diego tied at #23.
Several more California universities—primarily from the UC system—appeared further down within the top 100 of the 2,250 institutions evaluated globally. These include USC at #74, UC Davis at #95, UC Irvine at #99, and UC Santa Barbara at #100.
A closer look at the top 25
U.S. News based its rankings on 13 different indicators, using data from Clarivate’s Web of Science and InCites databases. A significant portion of each school’s score reflects how global experts assess its research reputation, along with supporting metrics such as total publications, citation impact, and the proportion of papers among the most highly cited worldwide.
