L.A. Metro’s D Line (formerly Purple Line) will close for over two months from this Saturday, May 17, to July 25, 2025. The new D Line extension will add 7 new stations across 9 miles of rail between Koreatown and Westwood, providing a critical link in L.A.’s transit system for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Construction began in 2019, but we are now beginning the first of three phased openings between 2025 and 2027. Following the two-month closure, D Line riders will have access to the first three stations (Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega) in fall 2025.
The closure is necessary to allow for the integration of new communication and power systems between the D Line’s current terminus and the extension. All D Line stations between Union Station and Wilshire/Western will be closed until July 25th, but Metro will increase alternate transit options in the meantime. Riders can take advantage of increased B Line (Red Line) service, shuttle buses between the affected stations, and existing Wilshire Boulevard bus routes.
The D Line extension is one of numerous flagship projects under Metro’s “Twenty-Eight by ’28” initiative, which works to complete 28 key transit upgrades before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. All three sections of the D Line extension should be operational before then, providing a direct link between DTLA, Beverly Hills, and Westwood/UCLA.
Other major projects within the initiative include the new LAX Metro Transit Center opening June 6th, providing a new rail link to the airport; and Metro’s A Line extension to Pomona with four new stations this summer. It’s all part of a push to support a “transit-first” Olympics, reducing L.A.’s notorious traffic congestion and easing movement for athletes, visitors, and residents during the Games.
