Nothing puts an Angeleno more on edge than a trip to the airport, where you’ll inevitably encounter some of the city’s worst traffic. Finally, in major news for travelers anyone who has ever driven a loved one to LAX, Metro is about to unveil the shiny new Metro Transit Center on June 6th, 2025. The world-class transport hub will provide a critical link between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the regional Metro rail system.
The stunning new center is located at Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street on the northeastern side of LAX, connecting travelers directly from the airport to Metro’s K and C rail lines and numerous bus lines. And lo, one of the most egregious gaps in L.A. transit infrastructure is filled.
Metro Transit Center design and features
Travelers will soon lay eyes on the Metro Transit Center’s spacious rail terminals, 16-bay bus plaza, and multilevel bike hub with secured parking. The design includes a pedestrian plaza and a dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off area, plus a customer service center and commercial area. In the main hub, look up to see a suspended spiral sculpture called The Distance of the Sun, designed by sculptor Glenn Kaino to evoke stylized ships journeying to the heavens.
Metro lines
Upon the June 6th opening date, the following Metro lines will connect directly to the Metro Transit Center:
- The K Line will connect all the way through LAX and south to Redondo Beach
- The C Line will add the new LAX station after its current end-of-line Aviation/Century station
Bus lines
If the K and C Lines don’t serve your transport needs, the Metro Transit Center will also expand numerous bus lines that go all over the city. See if any of these have a stop near you:
- Metro Bus Lines to South Gate (102), Norwalk (111), Downey (117), Whittier (120), and Long Beach (232)
- Santa Monica Big Blue Bus (3, Rapid 3) to Santa Monica
- Culver CityBus (6, Rapid 6) to Culver City and UCLA
- Beach Cities Transit (109) to Redondo Beach
- GTrans (Gardena) Line 5 to Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station, with connections to Metro A Line and El Segundo
- Torrance Transit Line 8 to Torrance
Automated People Mover
Importantly, there’s still one more step that travelers need to know about. In early 2026, LAX will debut the Automated People Mover, which is a 24/7 automated train system connecting the transit center with airport terminals. The People Mover will operate on its own elevated guideway, which should speed up movement between terminals and reduce traffic around the airport. But until that happens, LAX will offer shuttle buses to transport people between the Metro Transit Center and their terminal.
What’s next for the Metro Transit Center
The $900 million Metro Transit Center project is part of a larger, long-overdue $30 billion overhaul and modernization of LAX. Under the Capital Improvement Program, the airport will see major remodels on numerous parts of its infrastructure, from the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility, to the 146,000 Midfield Satellite Concourse, to the full reconstruction of Terminal 6.
What else is next? Well, for one thing: The Olympics. As 2028 looms closer, the Metro Transit Center and Automated People Mover will be rolled out under the world’s eyes (and scrutiny)—along with these other public transit projects.
Until then, Angelenos have plenty of time to experience the new Metro Transit Center for themselves, opening on June 6th, 2025.
