If you have a flight coming up at LAX, you’ll be pleased to hear that the new LAX/Metro Transit Center will officially open its doors on June 6th, 2025, providing a long-overdue rail link directly to the airport. But there’s still one component that won’t be in operation for a while longer: The Automated People Mover, a new train system running between the transit hub and airport terminals. Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s to come.
What is the Automated People Mover?
The Automated People Mover (APM) is a 24/7 automated train system that will connect the LAX/Metro Transit Center with airport terminals. It will operate on a 2.25-mile elevated guideway, bypassing traffic around the airport and providing a seamless, easy-to-navigate link for travelers to get to and from their terminal.
The APM will serve six stations—three in the terminal area, one at LAX Economy Parking, one at the LAX Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility, and of course, the LAX/Metro Transit Center station. During peak hours from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., APM trains will arrive every 2 minutes.
When does the APM open?
The APM is scheduled to open in 2026, with some sources specifying sometime in January. It was originally planned to open in 2023, but the project has been delayed several times.

How will travelers get to their terminal in the meantime?
Until the APM opens, LAX will run shuttle buses between the transit center and the lower level of each airport terminal. The shuttles will run every ten minutes.
When the LAX/Metro Transit Center opens on June 6th, travelers will be able to reach it via the Metro K and C lines, as well as numerous bus lines—more on those connections here.
How will the APM follow sustainable practices?
Like many L.A. public transit projects in the works right now, the APM follows sustainable, clean-energy practices in its design and function. The Development Group anticipates that around 30 million passengers will use the APM when it opens, resulting in an estimated 117,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled per day. The APM’s fleet will use fully electric cars made with 98% recyclable materials, and the Maintenance and Storage Facility will use solar energy for about half of its power.
What else is in the works at LAX?
The Metro Transit Center project is part of a larger $30 billion overhaul and modernization of LAX. The airport is working on major improvements for everything from the airfield and roadways to the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility. While these projects all have different timelines, the LAX/Metro Transit Center and Automated People Mover will no doubt make a major difference for mobility at the 2028 Olympics.
