We’re lucky to witness numerous natural phenomena on the California coast, from the annual winter monarch migration to elusive bioluminescent waves. But whale-watching may be one of the most simultaneously accessible and impressive marvels of our state—and luckily for those of us in Los Angeles, we live just a stone’s throw from the “dolphin and whale watching capital of the world.”
While the California coastline boasts dozens of whale-watching hotspots, Dana Point in Orange County is renowned for having the highest concentration of blue whales and dolphins on Earth. Whether you book a boat tour or find a great lookout spot in the headlands, you’re likely to enjoy some spectacular whale watching off Dana Point all year round.

Year-round whale watching at Dana Point
Whale watching is a year-round phenomenon at Dana Point thanks to staggered whale migration seasons. The area is an epicenter for marine species due to its great weather, underwater canyons, shallow waters, sprawling kelp beds, and thriving ecosystems. It’s also one of just two Whale Heritage Areas in California, and the first one to be established in the Americas.
Gray whales famously migrate along the California coast between November and April, and are even thought to use Dana Point as a reference point during their journey.
While blue whales are elusive on many California boat tours, they’re a more common phenomenon at Dana Point from May through November — an exciting opportunity to see the largest animal that has ever existed.
Other whale species known to appear at Dana Point include humpbacks, fin whales, minke whales, and orcas. On boat tours, you may also see common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, and Pacific white-sided dolphins.

Whale watching from land and sea
Dana Point’s Headlands Conservation Area is one of the best vantage points for whale watching from shore. The bluffs, coastal trail, and visitor center overlook a major “pinch point” where whales pass within a mile or two of land. Trails are open from 7am to sunset.
A boat tour is another fantastic way to see whales, dolphins, and more marine species in Dana Point. Here are a few whale watching tours to consider.
