After years of speculation and plenty of social media wish lists, Erewhon has officially signed a lease for its first-ever Orange County store. The luxury grocery chain is taking over the former T-Shirts Warehouse space at 140 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa.
The store has an expected opening date of September 2027.
The expansion marks another major step for the rapidly growing Los Angeles-based market, which has become known as much for its ultra-premium grocery experience as it has for celebrity collaborations and viral wellness trends.
From niche natural foods store to luxury grocery phenomenon
Founded in Boston in 1966 by Michio and Aveline Kushi, Erewhon originally focused on providing natural and organic foods long before they became mainstream. After relocating to Los Angeles, the company developed a loyal following by sourcing hard-to-find organic products and emphasizing nutrition-focused grocery shopping.
Today, Erewhon has evolved into one of Southern California’s most recognizable luxury grocery brands, attracting everyone from health-conscious locals to influencers and celebrities.
What shoppers can expect
While specific details about the Costa Mesa location haven’t been released yet, existing Erewhon stores are known for offering:
- fully organic produce sections
- luxury wellness and supplement aisles
- prepared foods made with premium ingredients
- organic hot bars and sushi counters
- smoothie and tonic bars featuring celebrity collaborations
- high-end beauty and skincare products
- café-style seating and curated interiors
The brand has built a reputation for turning grocery shopping into more of a lifestyle experience, blending wellness culture with upscale design and specialty products.
Expansion across Southern California
Erewhon currently operates multiple locations throughout Los Angeles County, including Venice, Pasadena, Culver City, Manhattan Beach, and West Hollywood.
The company is also planning additional stores in Glendale, Thousand Oaks, and Pacific Palisades as demand for luxury organic grocery shopping continues growing across Southern California.
For Orange County shoppers, the Costa Mesa opening will finally bring the viral market experience closer to home with no Westside traffic required.
