Get ready to mark your calendar and look up! This year, the night sky is offering a celestial treat with four incredible supermoons. These lunar events promise to dazzle us with their larger-than-life presence and captivating brightness.
What is a Supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when a full moon aligns with the point in its orbit closest to Earth, known as perigee. Perigee is the point in the moon’s elliptical orbit where it is nearest to Earth. This proximity makes the moon appear significantly larger and brighter — up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical “normal” full moon. The increased size and brilliance create a truly breathtaking celestial display.
Extra Phenomena — Supermoon Tides:
Additionally, supermoons can influence tides. When a full or new moon occurs at perigee, it can lead to higher-than-normal tides, known as perigean spring tides or king tides. These extreme high tides are sometimes referred to as supermoon tides. So, if you’re by the coast — you might notice these impressive tidal shifts during this period. Remember to stay safe during this time!
