Calling all astronomy lovers and moon gazers alike: a beautiful full Wolf Moon will shine brightly over L.A. today―right on time before the rain returns.
According to Farmer’s Almanac, the nickname stems from different cultures including Native American, Colonial American, and European. It’s believed that this month’s moon is named after the wolves that were often heard howling during the cold winters of January. In folklore, it’s said that a bright first Moon signifies a promise of rain and a bountiful harvest for the season to come… and with all the rain we’ve received this past week, the lore is holding up!
According to Time And Date, this year’s full Wolf Moon will rise on Friday, January 6th, 2023 at 4:45 P.M. PST.
Though the Wolf Moon will peak today, Angelenos can really get the best view after sunset and before moonrise the following evening on Saturday, January 7th, according to Forbes.
So grab your loved ones and don’t forget to look up this weekend. You won’t need any special equipment to catch this lunar beauty. If this weather permits it, your own eyes are just enough. In case the weather does get tricky―not to worry. Be sure to mark your calendar for the next full moon, known as the Snow Moon, that is set to take place on February 5th, 2023.
