Calling all star gazers and moon dreamers alike: a beautiful full Wolf Moon will shine brightly over Los Angeles this week — making it the first full moon of 2024.
According to Farmer’s Almanac, the Wolf Moon nickname stems from different cultures including Native American, Colonial American, and European. It’s believed that this month’s moon is named after the wolves that were often heard howling during the cold winters of January. Other cultural denominations for the January moon include Cold Moon, Frost Exploding Moon, Freeze Up Moon, and Severe Moon.
In folklore, it’s said that a bright first moon signifies a promise of rain and a bountiful harvest for the season to come… and with all the rain we’ve received this past weekend, the lore is holding up! (We’re crossing our fingers for a gorgeous California superbloom.)
Now if you’re looking to catch this show — Time And Date states that this year’s full Wolf Moon will rise on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 5:20 p.m. PST, and will appear bright throughout the night. Even if you do miss this celestial beauty on Thursday, you can still catch it the following Friday night.
There’s something charming about the moon shining over Los Angeles, so be sure to grab your loved ones, and don’t forget to look up this week. Luckily, the rain has cleared so you won’t need any special equipment to catch this lunar beauty. Your own eyes are just enough. In case the weather does get tricky ― don’t worry.
