Astronomy aficionados can enjoy a free stargazing event that brings dozens of telescopes together in one of the city’s most iconic settings. Griffith Observatory’s monthly Public Star Party invites visitors to explore the cosmos, chat with amateur astronomers, and get a closer look at the sky without paying a single cent for admission.
Held on the Observatory’s front lawn, the event brings together local astronomy groups that share their telescopes and vast knowledge with the public.
Depending on what’s visible in the sky, visitors may be able to observe the Moon, planets, and other celestial objects while learning more about the universe.
A free stargazing event in the heart of L.A.
The Public Star Party takes place once a month, with volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers, and The Planetary Society helping visitors explore the night sky.
Whether you’re an experienced astronomy enthusiast or have never looked through a telescope before, the event offers an opportunity to see celestial objects up close and ask questions about what you’re observing. You can also talk with telescope operators about their equipment and learn more about the hobby.
The event is also a chance to experience Griffith Observatory after sunset, when the city lights stretch across the surrounding hills and the sky becomes the main attraction.
When is the next Griffith Observatory Star Party?
The next Public Star Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Of course, each event is dependent on the weather conditions that day.
Since observing conditions and the objects visible through the telescopes can vary, it’s worth checking the Observatory’s official calendar before heading out.
Visitors should also plan to arrive early, as telescope lines may close before the event ends to ensure everyone has a chance to observe. Be aware that the astronomers and telescope demonstrators must cut off the line for each telescope to ensure that all viewings are completed by 9:45 p.m.
