Cajun Classics
If you’re looking for classic Creole dishes in Los Angeles cooked with lots of love and expertise, head to Harold and Belle’s. They’ve been running hot since 1969 back when owners, Harold and Mary Belle, only served up po-boy sandwiches, red beans and rice, and a Friday special of filé gumbo. At that time, the place had more of a hopping pool hall atmosphere where folks from back home could come together as a New Orleans transplant community.
Upscale Reimagining
When Harold Jr. and his wife, Denise, took over in 1979, the restaurant transformed into something a bit more upscale complete with candlelight and white linen tablecloths. The new owners also added several new items to the menu but still kept it classically Creole. The brand-new menu offered shrimp scampi, shrimp creole, crawfish étouffée, and clam chowder. They even started offering their special filé gumbo every single day of the week.
A New Era
In 2011, the third generation of the family stepped up and ushered Harold and Belle’s restaurant into a new era. Ryan and Jessica not only saved their family business, but they breathed new life into it. They even opened a large 30-person dining room and a luxurious private event space called “The Peacock Lounge.” Plus, they created their own take on vegan New Orleans cuisine called Geaux Plant-Based.
Lagniappe (Somethin’ Extra)
The current menu includes classic favorites like Louisiana-style catfish, shrimp scampi, beignets, and bread pudding. But the menu still makes room for new classics like a vegan BLT po-boy and an oyster mushroom po-boy. This Black-owned and third generation family-owned restaurant is keeping history and tradition alive and well in Los Angeles. Plus, the entire family has long been dedicated to upholding the Louisiana rallying cry of “Laissez les bon temps rouler” which means “Let the good times roll!”
