Earlier this year, Secret Los Angeles shared that the safest city in California, and now, another SoCal city has claimed a well-deserved top spot for safety, this time on a national level. An independent study conducted by the insurance fintech MoneyGeek analyzed publicly available standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI, focusing on what are considered large cities, those with more than 300,000 residents.
To determine the safest cities, MoneyGeek examined crime data, covering violent offenses like murder, rape, and aggravated assault, as well as property crimes such as home burglaries and vehicle thefts. They calculated the financial impact of crime for each city and ranked them according to the cost of crime per resident. In the overall ranking, Irvine, just over half an hour from DTLA in Orange County, comes out as the big winner, with a crime cost per capita of $324.
Irvine is well-known for its comprehensive city planning, serving as a pioneering model in the country. The city was designed to provide an exceptional quality of life by integrating housing, green spaces, schools, and shopping centers in a harmonious way. This approach has been recognized by organizations such as Zonda, as the Irvine Standard reported, which named it one of the best-planned communities in the country.

In addition, Irvine is home to the University of California, Irvine (UCI), a nationally respected institution, attracting talent and fostering a culturally vibrant environment. This combination of thoughtful city planning and educational excellence has contributed to Irvine’s reputation as one of the best places to live, and recently, it was also recognized as one of the top cities for renting a home.
