Just over a week ago, internet users worldwide discovered that a pair of eagles were incubating eggs, nearing the final stretch of their task in the mountains of Big Bear, just a few miles from Los Angeles. Watching it all unfold live on an adorable Truman Show-style livestream, we witnessed the eaglets hatching, and even the sad passing of one of the three chicks. Today, the family of four, made up of two eaglets and their parents, Jackie and Shadow, needs names for their little ones!
To make this happen, the nonprofit organization overseeing the bald eagle nest camera in Big Bear, Friends of Big Bear Valley, has announced that the much-anticipated Chick-Naming Contest is now open. So, get creative and think of the cutest names, you might be the winner!
The chick-naming contest will take place online and is open to everyone, aiming to raise funds for the nonprofit. You can participate by donating $5 for one entry, $10 for three entries, or $25 for ten entries. The competition is open worldwide, and the deadline to submit your ideas is Friday, March 28th, at 11:59 PM.
A computer will randomly select finalists for Big Bear elementary schools, where 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will vote by secret ballot on April 1st to choose the winning chick names. The results will be announced that evening on the organization’s official Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, website, and other social media channels. Participants who submitted the winning names will receive a certificate of recognition.
