The cost of living in Los Angeles keeps climbing, and finding a home that doesn’t consume a huge portion of a paycheck has become increasingly difficult for many residents. Cities across SoCal are searching for ways to create more options for people who want to stay close to jobs, transit, and coastal neighborhoods.
Santa Monica is now moving forward with a new residential project that aims to bring hundreds of new apartments, including homes reserved for lower-income residents. As Urbanize LA reports, the city is reviewing plans for a proposed apartment complex that would bring 353 new homes to a site near the Water Garden office complex.
Santa Monica’s new eight-story apartment community
According to plans presented to the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board, Modera Santa Monica would rise at 1633 26th Street, transforming 87,700 square feet currently occupied by an office complex into an eight-story residential building.
The contemporary podium-style development would feature a total of 353 apartments, including a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units designed for different household sizes. The building would also include two central courtyards, landscaped outdoor areas, and shared amenities.
Residents would have access to a large parking structure with space for 468 vehicles. The development’s affordable housing component would include 36 income-restricted apartments, for moderate-, low-, and very low-income households.
A construction timeline has not yet been announced, as the project is still moving through Santa Monica’s approval process.
