Last night’s Oscars ceremony not only honored great films but also paid tribute to the L.A. firefighters who have done so much for all Angelenos this year. Twelve firefighters from across L.A. County were brought on stage in between award presentations. They received more than a minute worth of cheering from the crowd for their brave efforts during January’s devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
Laughing with Heroes
Host Conan O’Brien welcomed them on stage and said “On behalf of everyone in greater Los Angeles – thank you for all that you do.” He then reminded the clapping crowd that they had to laugh at all the jokes read by the firefighters from the teleprompter by saying, “Everyone in this audience has to laugh. These are heroes!”
LAFD Captain Erik Scott read a jab about the 2019 film, “Joker.” He quipped, “Well our hearts go out to all of those who lost their homes. And I’m talking about the producers of ‘Joker 2.'”
LAFD helicopter pilot Jonith Johnson Jr. joked about actor Timothée Chalamet singing too well to play the part of Bob Dylan in the film, “A Complete Unknown.”
And finally Pasadena FD Captain Jodi Slicker made a joke about Conan only calling the LAFD when he gets stuck in a tree.
Awards Season Love
It’s not the first time that Los Angeles first responders have been honored during this year’s award season. L.A.’s First Responders and LAFD received cheers and a standing ovation at the GRAMMYs this past month. Plus, members of the Los Angeles Fire Department presented the award for Album of the Year at the Grammys.
