The Los Angeles Zoo announced a decision that marks the end of its elephant program: its last two Asian elephants will officially be relocated to the Tulsa Zoo, where they’ll enjoy better living conditions. The move is expected to happen soon, though no official date has been announced.
According to the official statement from the L.A. Zoo, echoed by the L.A. Times, the move is based on the animals’ need to be part of a larger social group with others of their kind. At their new home, Billy (40) and Tina (59) will have access to a 17-acre complex featuring a 36,650-square-foot barn and a 10-acre wooded preserve, offering a much more spacious and enriching environment. The relocation is intended to improve their social interactions and overall well-being.
Although some view the relocation as a positive step, others, including Courtney Scott from In Defense of Animals, have expressed disappointment that the elephants won’t be transferred to a sanctuary. This decision comes after years of pressure from local animal welfare advocates, and even prominent cultural figures and celebrities, including Cher and Lily Tomlin. Both have publicly spoken out about the physical and mental health of the pair.
