As part of LAX’s major renovation and modernization project ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games, one of the first major changes is already underway, just weeks after the dismantling of the airport’s iconic sign began. One of the airport’s most important terminals is set to be demolished.
According to Patch, the airport has been clearing out Terminal 5 since Tuesday 21, in preparation for a complete demolition and rebuild, which is set to begin on October 28. “This important step toward transforming LAX, marked by the closure of Terminal 5, represents a pivotal moment in our mission to provide a world-class airport experience,” said Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer for Los Angeles World Airports.
Over the coming week, airlines that were operating out of Terminal 5 will relocate to other terminals:
- JetBlue moved to Terminal 1 on Tuesday
- Spirit will shift to Terminal 2 on Wednesday
- American Airlines will move to Terminal 4 on Tuesday, October 28
Once American departs, Terminal 5 will be fully closed to begin demolition preparations.
LAX has also unveiled the newly built Midfield Satellite Concourse South, an extension of the West Gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. This expansion added over 150,000 square feet and eight additional gates to the terminal.
