Southern California is famous for its coastlines, but most of its popular beaches come with massive crowds. However, if you know where to look, there are still a few hidden spots where you can escape the noise and feel like you have the sand to yourself. Lechuza Beach is one of those places. Tucked away below a line of residential homes at the northern end of Malibu, it’s a quiet stretch of coast that stays surprisingly empty.
About SoCal’s secret paradise
Lechuza Beach is the kind of place where you can pack a sandwich, bring a good book, and pretend — just for a few hours — that you actually own a private piece of the California coast. Managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), this hidden gem was purchased for public use in the early 2000s. The spot is known for its rugged natural beauty, spectacular rock formations, and tranquil atmosphere. Because it lacks public parking lots and standard amenities like restrooms or lifeguards, it remains a pristine, uncrowded sanctuary.
How to access Lechuza Beach
Finding the beach requires navigating a residential neighborhood. You will need to park on Broad Beach Road and walk in. Here is exactly how to find the three entry points:
- The Bunnie Lane Entrance: Located right at the intersection of Bunnie Lane and Broad Beach Road. You’ll go through a small pedestrian gate, walk down a short dirt path, and take a set of wooden stairs straight to the sand.
- West Sea Level Drive: Located off the intersection of West Sea Level Drive and Broad Beach Road (about 0.20 miles west of Bunnie Lane). Once you go through the pedestrian gate, continue south. A short walk through the neighborhood leads to a beach staircase at the end of the street.
- East Sea Level Drive: Located at the intersection of East Sea Level Drive and Broad Beach Road (about 0.20 miles east of Bunnie Lane). After passing through the pedestrian gate, a short walk through the neighborhood leads directly to the beach at the end of the drive.
Maybe don’t tell all of your friends about it. Some secrets are worth keeping!
