Universal Studios Hollywood always gives it their all during Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) — and this year they’re bringing Latin American nightmares to life.
John Murdy, Creative Director at Universal Studios Hollywood announced the upcoming HHN 2023 maze — Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America. This isn’t the first time they brought these monsters to life. At the past HHN’s, people came face to face with El Cucuy in 2013 and La Llorona in 2022.
If you have Latin American roots, then chances are you grew up with some of these tales. Some of us are all too familiar with El Cucuy — a spirit/creature who would go after you if you didn’t listen to your parents or stayed outside too late. He was our version of the boogie man and is just one example of the many folklore monsters across Latin America.
This year, Universal Studios Hollywood is adding more to the list with their Monstruos maze featuring El Sibón, La Lechuza, Tlahuelpuchi, and more! (Scroll down for the lure behind them.) No doubt these folklores and creatures hold a special place in our spooky hearts, so seeing them in person at Horror Nights is certainly a nightmare come true.
🧟What To Expect At Monstruos:
- The maze is set to be narrated and guided by Muerte, Halloween Horror Night’s very own take on the Grim Reaper.
- Featured monsters include El Sibón, known as The Whistler — which is inspired by Colombian/Venezuelan tales; Tlahuelpuchi, derived from Mexican/Aztec origins, known as a vampire witch; and La Lechuza known as the Owl Witch which is inspired by Mexican folklore.
- John Murdy shared that the graveyards of Guadalajara and Guanajuato were the inspirations behind the upcoming house’s facade.
The Monstruos maze will be found in the Parisian Courtyard, connecting directly to an area where El Terror de Las Momias will roam — mummies inspired by Mexican Horror cinema in the 50s.
