On February 14, the City of Malibu announced that due to the collapse and erosion of the ocean side shoulder caused by recent storms, the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) will be closed in both directions, all lanes, nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., or later, from Sycamore Canyon Road to Las Posas Road until further notice.
Currently, the anticipated reopening schedule is unclear, given the varying factors and considerations, such as high tides or storm conditions. The city advises drivers to check road conditions and traffic alerts before driving. Additionally, with forecasts predicting more storms in the next week, drivers are advised to stay vigilant and consider using alternative routes. Drivers can refer to their navigation app, QuickMap from Caltrans or SigAlert, a Los Angeles traffic report site, before getting on the road.
City officials stated in their recent traffic alert advisory that the California Department of Transportation intends to address the collapsed slope by installing k-rails to block off the right-hand ocean side lane and implementing emergency stabilization measures towards the slope.
“A Caltrans inspector must assess the damage each morning and determine when it’s safe to reopen,” the City of Malibu wrote. “Crews will shift lanes to the land side to provide two lanes in both directions.”
You can head to the alert section of the City of Malibu‘s official site for the latest updates on this road closure.
