It’s no secret that the West Coast is renowned as the birthplace of the lowrider scene. Especially when you think of Los Angeles. Picture a lowrider cruising down a palm-lined street — you’ve likely seen it with your own eyes. L.A.’s lowrider history is deep and emerged as a powerful form of self-expression among the Latino community — and now the Petersen Museum is honoring lowrider culture with their “Best In Low” exhibit.
“As the popularity of lowrider culture has grown both within the United States and beyond. This exhibition is a new chapter focused on the artistry and craftsmanship of lowrider cars and the impact of this culture on the customization scene,” stated The Petersen Museum in a Press Release. “Los Angeles is often called the center of lowriding, and the city continues to be the dominant image of the culture both nationally and internationally.”
In the “Best In Low” showcase, you can explore an array of classic and contemporary lowriders from around the world — spanning from Los Angeles to Tokyo. The exhibit celebrates every facet of lowrider culture, from the stunning customization of paintwork and interiors to the intricate hydraulic systems. It also highlights intergral figures like Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol, along with other artwork that captures the essence of the lowrider community.
Whether you’re a fan of lowriders, an art enthusiast, a car buff — or all of the above, “Best in Low” offers a rich cruise through the artistry, history, and cultural significance of lowriding that has expanded beyond the West Coast. Everything will be on display until next year, so come along for the ride and don’t miss it!
