Los Angeles has no shortage of unusual homes, but few make quite the same impression as an entirely purple Victorian house. Tucked away on Mount Royal Drive in Eagle Rock, this historic residence stands out with its bold lavender color and ornate architecture, offering a glimpse into a very different era of the city’s history.
Known as Esperanza, meaning “Hope” in Spanish, the home dates back to 1888, when Los Angeles was experiencing a period of rapid growth and architectural experimentation.
Now, the distinctive property is opening its doors for two afternoons this Halloween weekend, giving visitors a chance to take a closer look.
Inside Esperanza, Eagle Rock’s historic purple home
Built during the Southern California Land Boom of the 1880s, Esperanza is an example of Queen Anne-style architecture, a Victorian-era design known for its elaborate details, asymmetrical shapes, and eclectic influences.
The house features a lavender exterior accented by darker purple trim, a tall conical turret, decorative scalloped shingles, and a covered porch framed by stonework. Together, these details give the residence its distinctive fairytale-like appearance.
The home also reflects a fascinating chapter in Los Angeles history. During the 1880s, rapid population growth, expanding transportation networks, and the influence of European design helped transform the region’s residential architecture.
New industrial manufacturing methods made decorative building materials more accessible, inspiring elaborate homes that blended traditional influences with imaginative details.
More than 130 years later, Esperanza remains a striking example of the architectural experimentation that shaped early Los Angeles.
