If you’re planning your next vacation, travel for work or simply visiting friends and family within the country in 2025, there’s a key document you’ll need to carry to board your flight: the REAL ID. In just over a year, California residents accustomed to using their standard state-issued driver’s licenses or ID cards for boarding commercial flights, will no longer have that option.
What is the REAL ID?
It’s a federally recognized form of identification valid for domestic air travel, accessing nuclear power plants, and entering specific federal facilities. It’s typically distinguished by a star located in the top right corner. The ID has seen numerous extensions, partly due to the pandemic. But now the deadline to get this key document is finally here.
When will you need the REAL ID?
The deadline is May 7, 2025. After that date, Americans who don’t have this document won’t be able to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
Why do you need one?
The IDs are a security benchmark established by a 2005 Act, enhancing national security and establishing a baseline for identification verification across all states in the U.S. Congress, prompted by the 9/11 Commission, passed the Act to standardize security for state IDs and licenses nationwide.

Do you need a REAL ID to fly internationally?
No. The ID will only work inside the United States. For every flight across the border, you will need an up-to-date valid passport.
What does the ID look like?
A Real ID identification card issued in California will feature an image of a grizzly bear and a star located in the upper right corner. Conversely, a federal non-compliant card will display the phrase “Federal Limits Apply” in that same area.
What’s the difference between a regular driver’s license & a REAL ID?
Besides the fact that they look different, as they’re two different types of IDs, the primary distinction lies in the level of security they offer. An ID provides enhanced security features, allowing it to be accepted at airports for domestic flights within the U.S., entry into federal buildings, and access to specific military bases. A standard driver’s license lacks these capabilities.
What are the penalties for not renewing your ID on time?
While there are no late fees or penalties for renewing an expired DL/ID card, it is important to note that it is illegal to purchase alcohol or drive with an expired ID or driver’s license. Additionally, as mentioned previously, having an expired ID or driver’s license will prevent you from boarding domestic flights or entering some federal facilities.
