Just 1.5 hours from Los Angeles, San Juan Capistrano is a bucket-list travel destination for any fan of California history. The incredible Los Rios Historic District is the oldest neighborhood in California, incidentally turning 250 this year right at the same time as the United States’ semiquincentennial.
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776 by Junípero Serra, and the historic Los Rios Street and the surrounding town gradually grew alongside it.
Among the many worthwhile destinations on Los Rios Street, the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society’s O’Neill Museum is a great place to start.
A 150-year-old home for the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society
The San Juan Capistrano Historical Society is based in one of Los Rios Street’s most historical homes, the Garcia/Pryor Residence. It operates the small O’Neill Museum, which houses extensive archives chronicling the region’s past.
The home was originally built between 1870 and 1880 by saloon owner José Garcia for his wife, Refugio Yorba, making it one of the town’s earliest frame houses. After Garcia’s dramatic murder in 1896, the property passed to Albert Pryor in 1903, whose family lived there for decades. Local legend says that Mr. Pryor’s ghost stayed behind.
In 1976, the building was donated to the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, relocated to Los Rios Street, and carefully restored through community effort and funding, including a major contribution from the O’Neill family.
To celebrate the historic district’s 250th anniversary, the Historical Society is also currently offering once-monthly free trolley tours on the first Tuesday of the month from 10-11am and 11:30-12:30pm. They’re completely free to join, but it’s best to register in advance. Read our article about the trolley tours for more details.
