Six Flags California’s Great America may be nearing the end of its run.
California’s Great America is a 112-acre amusement park located in Santa Clara, California. And after almost 50 years entertaining Californians, the amusement park could soon be closing its doors for good.
The sad news comes at an inconvenient time as the park is currently preparing to celebrate its 50th season in 2026.
Six Flags California’s Great America is not the only Six Flags park to face closure. On May 1, it was announced that Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, will be closing at the end of the 2025 season.
Why is Six Flags California’s Great America possibly closing?
Six Flags California’s Great America park is expected to close after the 2027 season, unless the company decides to extend its lease. The park’s latest lease is set to end on June 30, 2028. This means the park would have to close in October 2027 after the popular Halloween season.
According to People magazine, the issue was discussed during Six Flags Investor Day 2025 on May 20, 2025. When asked about Six Flags California’s Great America park possibly closing, Six Flags chief financial officer Brian Witherow stated, “Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season.”
What is the history of Six Flags California’s Great America?
Six Flags California’s Great America park originally opened in 1976 as one of two parks built by the Marriott Corporation. At that time, it was called “Marriott’s Great America.” It was built to celebrate the American Bicentennial with themed areas representing different regions and eras of U.S. history. The park was sold to the City of Santa Clara in 1985. After changing ownership twice more, it was finally sold to the current owners, Prologis, in 2022.
Are there any plans for the land if the park closes?
If Six Flags California’s Great America park actually closes in 2027 as tentatively planned, it’s not yet known precisely what will happen to the park. However, Prologis is already making potential plans for the land. According to the Los Angeles Times, Prologis spokesperson Jennifer Nelson stated, “We’re focused on identifying and partnering with planning and design experts to help us create a master plan for the property.”
