Fun facts about Sleeping Beauty Castle
- The odd one out: As your eyes drift upward to the dazzling, golden turrets, you will inevitably spot one oddly dull spire standing out from the rest. A 1990s experimental patina process simply didn’t yield the expected shine, leaving the metal looking wonderfully weathered instead!
- The coins go to charity: Gazing into the shimmering blue moat, you will spot countless coins winking in the bright California sun. Tossing a penny in is a beloved daily ritual and every single cent splashing into those waters is meticulously gathered and donated directly to local charities.
- Out of use: The drawbridge hasn’t been used since 1983, when the area received a makeover.
- The Accidental Reversal: When the original art directors were showing a 3D model to Walt Disney, they temporarily rotated the top half 180 degrees. Walt walked in, adored the reversed look, and the top was permanently built backwards from its initial design!
But there’s more….
- The structure is surprisingly small: standing at only 77 feet tall. The creators wanted it to feel welcoming rather than cold and imposing. To make it appear grander, the creative designers used forced perspective, making bricks and roof tiles progressively smaller near the turrets. They also utilized atmospheric perspective by painting the bottom with warm pinks and blending the top into the sky with light blues.
- Always Ready for a Photo: The castle is intentionally oriented to the North. This ensures the sun is never directly behind the spires, preventing harsh backlighting so that visitors always get a perfectly lit, postcard-worthy picture at any time of day.
- The Hidden Upper Level: The top floor was never intended to house an attraction, but Walt famously hated wasted space. In 1957, the area was transformed into a stunning walkthrough featuring glowing dioramas that tell a classic story in a striking geometric style.
