When most people think of Hallmark-worthy Christmas towns, snowy New England villages or cozy Southern cabin retreats usually come to mind. But new research reveals that one of the most festive, movie-ready winter destinations in the U.S. is right here in California. It’s tucked away in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
According to a new study by Betway Casino, Truckee, California is the 5th most Hallmark-like Christmas towns in America. The town beat out destinations across the country thanks to its snowy winters, abundance of cozy cabins, and undeniable small-town charm.
A Snowy California Wonderland
Located just north of Lake Tahoe, Truckee transforms into a true winter wonderland each December. The town sees an average of 375 mm of snowfall. Plus, the crisp temperatures hover around 26.6°F, creating the kind of snow-dusted scenery usually reserved for holiday movie sets.
Despite being in California, Truckee’s alpine setting delivers the full festive package. It offers snow-covered rooftops, pine-lined streets, and glowing storefronts that feel tailor-made for a Christmas montage.
Small-Town Charm with Big Holiday Energy
Truckee’s holiday magic comes from its abundance of cozy places to stay and its laid-back mountain charm. The town offers 1,441 vacation rentals with indoor fireplaces and 827 cabin rentals, making it easy to settle in after a snowy day, whether you’re traveling as a couple, family, or group. Add in 15 local cafés for warming up with a seasonal drink, plus a historic downtown and nearby ski resorts, and you get a festive atmosphere that feels authentic rather than overdone.
