Apple is introducing a new digital passport feature in Apple Wallet as part of the iOS 26 update launching this fall, following in the footsteps of Google Wallet. The TSA has approved this Digital ID for use on domestic flights within the U.S., including at major California airports like LAX and SFO.
However, it won’t be valid for international travel, so travelers are still advised to carry their physical U.S. passport.
“Digital ID offers a secure and private new way for users to store and present their ID information using their iPhone and Apple Watch,” Apple said in a statement. “Users can seamlessly create and add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet using a U.S. passport.”

When will iPhone’s Digital ID be available?
Apple has stated that iOS 26 will launch “this fall,” which many tech experts interpret as mid-September based on the company’s usual iOS release schedule.
The new passport feature will work similarly to how Apple Wallet currently handles driver’s licenses in select states like California. To set it up, users will scan their physical passport using their phone’s camera and complete a facial recognition check. Beyond travel, the Digital ID can also be used online to verify your identity securely—eliminating the need to upload sensitive documents.
What should travelers know about using the Digital ID at airports?
While Apple’s Digital ID can streamline airport security checks for domestic flights, it’s not a full substitute for a physical passport. The TSA has approved it for domestic use only and strongly recommends keeping your physical passport on hand. For international travel and crossing borders, the physical passport remains essential.
Additionally, the digital passport serves as a Real ID alternative for domestic flights, helping users meet the new Real ID requirements. iOS 26 will also bring other enhancements to Apple Wallet, such as real-time flight updates, terminal maps, and compatibility with Find My for tracking AirTagged luggage.
