From Tokyo and Hong Kong and now to Los Angeles, Udatsu Sushi has brought its Michelin-starred omakase experience to California.
It’s a delicious sushi experience that is certainly worth the splurge.
What is omakase?
Omakase is a Japanese word that describes trusting a chef to curate a multi-course meal with fresh ingredients.
Udatsu Sushi’s standard menu offers a 17-course omakae experience of “Edomae-style sushi, showcasing a selection of seasonal and chef-curated fish, expertly prepared nigiri, and an assortment of sushi and cold plate bites.”
The plates might be small, some are even just a single bite, but you’ll be stuffed by the end of the meal.
What’s Udatsu Sushi?
The bar and sushi spot is tucked away on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and opened in the fall of 2024. Though it’s relatively new to L.A., Udatsu Sushi also has restaurants in Hong Kong, China and Tokyo, Japan. The latter is Michelin-starred.
The first U.S. location is led by Chef Shingo Ogane, “the trusted protégé of Chef Hisashi Udatsu,” the Michelin-starred Chef after whom the restaurant is named. According to a press release, Ogane “brings years of discipline, precision, and Tokyo-trained technique to the location.”
The selection of fish is excellent; some are overnighted directly from Japan from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market, while others are locally sourced here in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Every ingredient in each bite is intentional and masterfully selected for your taste buds.
The experience only serves 8 people at a time, two seatings a night from Wednesday through Sunday, and you need a prepaid reservation to attend. The price is $225 per person.
And don’t forget the bar downstairs!
You can begin your omakase experience at Rokusho with Tokyo-trained mixologist Joe Honda. You can also order the drinks while dining.
