Vasquez Rocks: Geology, History, and Hollywood
The Vasquez Rocks were formed over millions of years of sedimentation, erosion, and fault movement, dating back to the late Oligocene and early Miocene period.
Originally, the Indigenous Tataviam people inhabited this area of present-day L.A. County, leaving behind grinding holes and rock art which can still be seen today. Bandido Tiburcio Vasquez is their namesake, having used the rocks as a hideout in the 19th century.
The striking rock formation has been a popular Hollywood filming location for decades, especially for westerns and sci-fi productions. You may recognize them from old classics like Dracula (1931), Blazing Saddles (1974), and the Star Trek TV show. More recently, they’ve appeared in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), The Big Bang Theory, New Girl, and Westworld.
