A foundation built on a personal collection
The institution traces its origins directly to founder Adam Clark Vroman. Vroman originally relocated to California with the hope that the local climate would improve his wife’s failing health. When she passed away just two years after their move, a grieving Vroman made the decision to part with his extensive personal book collection. He sold his library to secure the funding needed to open the original storefront. More than 130 years after that initial sale, the shop remains independently owned.
While the historical foundation remains, the space has evolved to keep readers engaged beyond the bookshelves.
